Two Simple Rules to Stop Procrastinating and Start Doing
Here are two different 2-minute rules that can help you beat procrastination and boost your productivity.
They are from two different books, and we’ll cover them in two minutes:
Rule 1: If it takes 2 minutes to do, get it done now
This rule is from the book Getting Things Done by David Allen.
The idea is simple: if there is something that you can do in two minutes or less, don’t delay it or write it down on a to-do list. Just do it right away.
This rule helps you avoid wasting time and energy on tasks that can pile up and overwhelm you later.
It also biases your brain towards taking action and away from procrastination.
Here are some examples of things that might take two minutes or less throughout the day:
• Making your bed.
• Emptying the trash.
• Wiping down kitchen counters.
• Watering a small houseplant.
• Filling a water bottle.
Rule 2: If there’s something you don’t want to do, simplify the task to 2 minutes or less
This rule is from the book Atomic Habits by James Clear.
The idea is also simple: if there is something that you don’t want to do, break it down into a smaller and easier task that you can do in two minutes or less.
This rule helps you overcome the inertia and resistance that prevent you from getting started on something important or challenging.
It also helps you build momentum and confidence by achieving small wins.
Here are some examples of how to simplify a task to two minutes or less:
• Reading the chapter on quantum physics becomes reading one paragraph.
• Writing a 10-page essay becomes writing one sentence.
• Running 5 kilometers becomes running for 2 minutes.
• Meditating for 30 minutes becomes meditating for 2 minutes.
If you’re skeptical, then limit yourself to only 2 minutes.
You might be surprised by how much you can accomplish in such a short time. And once you start, you might feel motivated to continue and finish the task.
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” - Lao Tzu
